Scientific Assistant on Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage Technologies

The Chair of Energy Systems Analysis (ESA), within the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT) at ETH Zurich, is seeking a Scientific Assistant to support a research project focused on seasonal thermal energy storage technologies.

The ESA Chair operates at the intersection of engineering and economics, developing and applying energy system models to various energy systems and research questions. Led by Prof. Dr. Russell McKenna, the ESA group emphasizes the optimization and assessment of complex systems and infrastructures, prioritizing environmentally and economically sustainable design and operations. Additionally, the Laboratory for Energy Applications (LEA) at PSI explores diverse energy technologies through interdisciplinary research and modeling tools, aiding decision-makers in addressing complex energy challenges.

Job Description

You will assist the ESA Chair in this interdisciplinary research project, which involves the following tasks:

  • Conducting literature and data reviews for seasonal thermal energy storage (STES) technologies and projects
  • Processing and analyzing data
  • Performing techno-economic and environmental analysis
  • Preparing presentations and project reports in both German and English
  • Communicating and collaborating with project partners and stakeholders in German and English

Depending on the candidate's background and experience, as well as the level of employment, the project offers opportunities for model-based energy system analysis and the potential for scientific publications. This position is related to an ongoing research project involving several municipalities in the Pfannenstiel region, supported by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy.

Profile

The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications:

  • MSc-level degree (or soon to obtain) in a relevant field, such as energy engineering, economics, business engineering, etc.
  • Motivation and interest in sustainable energy
  • Desire to work with local stakeholders at the municipal level
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in German and English (proficiency in at least one as a native language)
  • Experience in quantitative analysis, such as techno-economic analysis or environmental assessment, is advantageous
  • Basic knowledge or background in seasonal thermal energy storage is beneficial
