Your Role and Responsibilities

As a Research Scientist at ABB, you will be at the forefront of developing innovative sensing solutions for our next generation systems and products. We are seeking a dynamic team member with a proven research track record, eager to translate world-class academic research into practical applications within an industrial setting. The work model for this role is hybrid.

Main Accountabilities

You will be primarily responsible for:

  • Leading and contributing to research projects in industrial sensing that address the specific needs of our businesses, with applications spanning process automation, process industries, port automation, and maritime transport.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams to develop innovative, high-value sensing products and solutions, guiding them from the concept definition phase through to experimental verification.
  • Evaluating new technologies and conducting technical surveys, while generating impactful project proposals for the business.
  • Disseminating your findings through scientific publications and internal technical reports, and contributing to the generation of intellectual property.
  • Working in collaboration with researchers and engineers from other research centers, ABB business units, and universities.

Qualifications for the Role

  • A PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with a strong background in machine perception and computer vision.
  • Expertise in fields such as machine learning, reinforcement learning, sensor fusion, digital signal processing, or time series analysis is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C/C++) and familiarity with the Linux ecosystem.
  • Hands-on experience with sensing hardware and software pipelines for cameras, LIDAR, or radar is a plus.
  • A proven publication track record at leading scientific conferences and journals.
  • A team player attitude, with a willingness to learn new industrial applications and work across a broad range of technologies.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English.
