Research Assistant / Research Assistant

ETH Zurich - June 1, 2025

Research Assistant / Pairwise Comparison of Subvectors in a Large Number of Matrices

10%-30%, Zurich, fixed-term

The chair pursues research primarily in the areas of applied international and public economics, as well as applied econometrics. Our research findings are disseminated mainly through presentations at international conferences and workshops, as well as publications in leading academic journals in economics.

Project Background

We possess fully vectorized data of a large number of musical scores, each represented by a matrix. The objective is to conduct pairwise comparisons of n-grams (snippets of fixed size) across these scores to establish similarity scores for all pairs of pieces.

Job Description

The data set we are working with is extensive, requiring a simplified (condensed) approach to the problem:

  • Identify the most relevant columns in a piece (to be specified based on informed estimates).
  • Examine random sections of pieces (or segments of those sections) instead of analyzing full matrices.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the simplified approach using a small set of complete score comparisons.

Profile

We seek a student proficient in C++ or RUST, as well as Python.

There are existing Python routines to perform the mentioned tasks for full matrices; however, the following adjustments must be made:

  • Modify the routines to operate based on random snippets from selected data.
  • Utilize C++ or RUST for improved speed, as Python can be slower for this task.

Workplace

The work environment will be vibrant and collaborative, positioned within the esteemed ETH Zurich community.
