Position Overview

The University of Bern is seeking an accomplished Master of Science in Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Climate Sciences, Earth Sciences, or Quaternary Sciences, with a specialization in sedimentary palaeo sciences and/or vegetation ecology.

Responsibilities

The role involves intensive microscopic and laboratory analyses, including the examination of pollen, macrofossils, and ancient DNA (aDNA). Additionally, the position will require 2-3 months of fieldwork in Mediterranean environments focused on core and data collection.

Qualifications

  • A Master of Science in a relevant field
  • Experience with labor-intensive laboratory analyses
  • Fieldwork experience in diverse environments is advantageous
  • Knowledge of Greek and/or Italian is a plus

Enrollment and Duration

The selected PhD student will be enrolled in the Graduate School of Climate Sciences, with the PhD awarded by the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Bern. The position is set to commence on January 1, 2026, with a maximum duration of four years.

Salary and Benefits

The salary will adhere to the Swiss standard for doctoral students, with a gross yearly salary ranging between 47,000 and 55,000 CHF, contingent on the duration of employment.
