Your Responsibilities

The PhD student will conduct a series of experiments utilizing microbial predator-prey communities in controlled laboratory settings. This will involve the use of a 3D tracking system that enables high-resolution, high-throughput measurements of both individual behavior and functional responses. The data collected will be crucial for testing hypotheses regarding variations in functional response shapes and will assist in parameterizing a model that derives functional responses based on underlying movement behaviors, developed in collaboration with partners at the University of Amsterdam. This project includes frequent visits and exchanges between UZH and the University of Amsterdam.

Your Profile

• Master's level degree in Ecology or a closely related field.
• Strong knowledge of ecological concepts and theories, particularly in movement ecology, community stability, species interactions, and food webs.
• Experience in designing, conducting, and analyzing ecological experiments.
• Proficiency in scientific writing.
• Strong project management skills.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Prior laboratory experience with microbial systems, interest in quantitative approaches (statistical and mathematical modeling, programming), and method development (3D tracking) is a plus.
