100%, Zurich, Fixed-term
The Sensing, Interaction & Perception Lab invites applications for a PhD position in Computational Interaction, focusing on sensor-based input detection for Augmented and Mixed Reality. This research combines physiological time series analysis (EEG, EMG, EOG), machine learning, and real-time system design for intelligent interaction systems. Ideal candidates should have a background in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Robotics, along with prior experience in event detection in differential recordings.
Emerging AR/VR interfaces are limited by the input modalities they rely on. This project aims to explore sensor-based approaches, starting with EEG and later incorporating EMG/EOG, to detect user input and intent. We will investigate how sensed differential signals can be leveraged for input, interaction, and adaptive control in Mixed Reality (MR) environments. Key challenges include signal denoising, robust event detection, and modeling shifts across sessions and users.
We offer an exciting environment and team for your studies and research. Beyond the lab, ETH Zürich hosts several internationally recognized research groups dedicated to interactive systems, Human-Computer Interaction, AR/VR, health, and machine learning. Our research often involves collaboration with various groups, departments, and institutions in Switzerland and abroad.
During your PhD, you will have the opportunity to contribute to and collaborate with the ETH AI Center and engage with ETHAR, ETH's Research Hub for Augmented Reality, in partnership with Google XR.
