The Professorship for the History of the Modern World at D-GESS (Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences), ETH Zurich, invites applications for a fully funded, full-time, 4-year PhD position in Global History, starting 1 July 2025 (or at the earliest convenience of the successful candidate).
This position is part of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) research project, Engineering Empires from the Margins: Global Techno-Colonialism and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, c. 1860-1980, led by Prof. Dr. Harald Fischer-Tiné and coordinated by Dr. Monique Ligtenberg.
While a postdoctoral researcher will explore the broader global entanglements of Swiss engineering, the PhD project, titled From Colonial Complicity to Intercultural Sensitivity? The Geologists Albert (1849-1937) and Arnold Heim (1872-1965), will focus on the (post)colonial backdrop and disciplinary shifts within geology, traced through the lives and work of ETH professors Albert Heim and his son, petroleum geologist Arnold Heim.
