Role

As a Patent Scientist, you will play a crucial role in protecting and valorizing SICPA’s intellectual property assets across a broad range of technologies, scientific domains, and business activities. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with internal inventors and technology partners to identify and extract patentable inventions, preparing technical memos, and leading the preparation of patent applications or trade secrets.
  • Working closely with internal patent attorneys to ensure the scope and value of inventions are effectively translated into patent applications.
  • Assisting the Legal IP team in the filing and defense of patent applications until patents are granted.
  • Contributing to strategic discussions regarding the patent portfolio.
  • Cooperating with the Legal IP team, Research & Innovation teams, and Business Units to focus on technical memo content and formulate strategies in response to third-party observations.
  • Evaluating and mitigating third-party IP risks, conducting oppositions, and assessing IP clearance and Freedom to Operate.
  • Driving patent watch, monitoring, and landscaping activities as part of a global and multi-disciplinary competitive intelligence effort.

Profile

  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Physical Chemistry.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of industry experience, preferably in R&D.
  • Fluency in French and English with a good understanding of German.
  • Experience with intellectual property (IP) tasks and patent research tools is a plus.
  • Broad technical knowledge, curiosity, and openness to new ideas and technologies.
  • Strong analytical skills with a high attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills to engage with diverse internal and external stakeholders, including research scientists, engineers, technology partners (startups, corporates, academia), patent counsels, business development, and sales managers.
  • A strong team spirit and eagerness to learn and contribute.
  • Exceptional organizational and planning skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects under tight deadlines.
  • Capability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Proficiency in standard IT tools, such as MS Office.
