ETH Zürich - June 1, 2025

FIRST-Center for Micro- and Nanoscience

FIRST is an interdepartmental cleanroom facility directly supported by ETH Zürich. This technology platform serves the scientific community at ETH Zürich. FIRST stands for Frontiers in Research: Space and Time, and it caters to a multi-disciplinary spectrum of departments within ETH as well as industry, supporting research and development in a broad range of micro- and nanotechnologies.

Throughout the history of science, groundbreaking discoveries have been made by pushing boundaries—the quest for shorter time scales, lower temperatures, greater intensities, higher energies, smaller distances, and cleaner materials has driven innovation. The impact of technology on new scientific discoveries is well documented. FIRST-Lab aims to provide a comprehensive technology and fabrication facility to foster research at these frontiers. One of a university's core responsibilities is to remain at the cutting edge of technology, which can make predicting upcoming breakthroughs and determining precise technological support needs challenging over the next decade. To address this, FIRST was established with maximum flexibility. An open-concept approach has been implemented, allowing rapid responses to the scientific needs of a quickly evolving field while welcoming participation from newly established research groups. The FIRST-Lab will be driven by scientific motivation, with technology serving as a tool for science.
