The Irene M. Staehelin (IMS) Foundation, established in 2020, embodies the vision of its benefactor, Irène M. Staehelin-Schindler, to tackle today’s challenges and improve the lives of those most in need. Based in Zurich, the IMS Foundation focuses on humanitarian aid, human and women’s rights, development, and nature and species protection. With a substantial endowment to be utilized through 2045, the foundation is positioned to be a powerful force for good in a time of enormous challenge, change, and opportunity. Our small, focused team supports a select number of partner organizations annually.

Position Overview: Head of Programmes - Nature and Species Protection

The IMS Foundation believes that the philanthropic sector plays a critical role in nature and species protection. We are seeking a highly motivated Head of Programmes for this thematic pillar. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Head of Programmes, Nature and Species Protection ("HoP Nature and Species Protection"), will design, select, and manage initiatives while cooperating closely with other Heads of Programmes to ensure that human, women’s, and indigenous rights, as well as development and humanitarian considerations, are integrated into the Nature and Species portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the programme strategy in alignment with the IMS Foundation’s values and principles.
  • Scout, select, and partner with private and public organizations and funders.
  • Oversee grant-making processes, monitor impact, and foster learning.
  • Design a programme that bridges academic insights on biodiversity, climate change, and conservation with locally led conservation practices.

Candidate Profile

This is a unique opportunity for an individual who is highly motivated and solutions-oriented, eager to advance the mission of the IMS Foundation. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Extensive experience in nature and species protection with a proven track record in programmatic leadership.
  • A strategic and holistic approach focused on locally led conservation practices.
  • The ability to work cross-culturally, complemented by excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • An understanding of how philanthropy can drive change across diverse stakeholders, from grassroots organizations and marginalized groups to governmental institutions and academia.

Fluency in English is required, and proficiency in German, French, or Spanish is considered a strong asset.

Location and Travel Requirements

The position can be based in Zurich, Switzerland, or Nairobi, Kenya. Other program countries of the Foundation in Africa or Ecuador and Colombia may be considered on a case-by-case basis. The successful candidate should be willing to travel 10-20% of the time.

Compensation

The salary is competitive and commensurate with the experience required.
