Summary

The International Medical Affairs (MA) team serves as the voice of our international markets, focusing on our top priority areas and addressing their needs throughout pre-launch, launch, lifecycle management, and in-market activities. This role is responsible for key strategic areas within the International Therapeutic Area (TA) and serves as a deputy to the Head of International Medical Affairs CRM in key leadership forums.

In this position, you will provide aligned input from top priority international markets into the Integrated Evidence Plan (IEP) and oversee the implementation of scientific communications and medical education strategies, along with relevant medical standards. You will support planning and execution for medical and scientific engagement strategies, which include Medical Science Liaison (MSL) and Field Medical Affairs strategy, medical education programs, scientific publication planning, and Medical Expert network development, addressing the strategic needs for pre-launch and launch activities that deliver value to healthcare systems.

As a subject matter expert, you will contribute to the overarching strategies for international markets, providing essential input during the design and execution of programs while aligning priorities with business objectives. Additionally, you will partner strategically with International Commercial, International Value & Access, Global, Regional, US MA, and Development teams.

About the Role

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the International Medical Affairs team for a specific disease area (Renal) and manage international medical directors (direct reports) and any medical directors on temporary rotation/assignment to the team.
  • Oversee the medical affairs launch strategy for priority programs in key international countries, employing transformational tactics such as research/population health, innovative partnerships, and integrated evidence plans.
  • Advise on plans for evidence generation, MSL / Field Medical Affairs strategy, medical education programs, scientific publication planning, and Medical Expert network development with TAs.
  • Co-own the development and implementation of innovative education and scientific communication plans for all brands, targeting external stakeholders in international markets.
  • Conduct financial tracking to ensure the timely and cost-effective development & execution of medical activities.
  • Collaborate with Development, Global Medical Affairs (GMA), International Value & Access, and International Commercial and Launch Strategy (CLS) to shape the launch portfolio and diversify evidence for broad access at launch.
  • Represent International Medical Affairs in discussions around prioritized portfolios with internal (GMA, Development, Biomedical Research, etc.) and external audiences, including investment, medical, regulatory communities, and industry collaborators.
  • Act as the voice of the patient internally, assessing factors relevant to informed decision-making, ensuring that Patient Access programs are supported for all brands within International Medical Affairs.
  • Provide guidance on the development and implementation of successful reimbursement and market-access strategies.
  • Shape Field Medical Strategies, develop and execute Field Medical plans, and ensure the implementation of key Field Medical initiatives.
  • Contribute proactive medical input to asset lifecycle management to consider new therapeutic opportunities and ensure compliance with company policy guidelines and high medical quality standards.

Essential Requirements:

  • MD (preferred) or PhD/PharmD in Health Sciences; a specialist degree or qualification in the relevant discipline is advantageous.
  • 7+ years of experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry, particularly in Medical Affairs and/or Clinical Development.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to establish credibility and influence diverse stakeholders in a matrix organization.
  • In-depth understanding of healthcare systems and key external stakeholders, coupled with an agile mindset for leading across Disease Areas.
  • Comprehension of unmet medical needs and the ability to generate the right evidence while utilizing innovative communication formats for effective dissemination.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across functions and markets, sustaining peer credibility with external stakeholders.
  • Capability to operate in an environment of shared outcomes and cross-business accountabilities, showcasing critical thinking and navigation through uncertainty.
  • Track record demonstrating a focus on delivering quality and timeliness in medical affairs projects, alongside successful implementation of innovative programs and processes.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Significant medical affairs pre-launch and launch experience in major markets (e.g., Germany, China, Japan) is highly preferred. Experience in renal disease is advantageous.
  • Experience in developing and executing "Best in Class" processes at scale.
