Job Title: Trader - Physical Trading Desk

This position focuses on supporting the management of our physical trading desk and overseeing positions in small to midsized origins and customers. The trader will be responsible for developing and implementing physical trading strategies. This role necessitates the cultivation of strong relationships throughout the industry, the management of niche trading books, and the reporting of P&L on both a daily and monthly basis. Close collaboration with internal stakeholders is essential, along with a constant eagerness to seek out trading opportunities. Candidates must demonstrate a strong ability to adapt, as regulatory developments (EUDR) will create trading opportunities for the most proactive players in the industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Senior Traders in the management of their profit centers and be prepared to substitute for them in their absence.
  • Thoroughly analyze the balance sheet and assist Senior Traders in developing trading strategies tailored to each origin.
  • Develop a supplier base within small-sized producing origins and manage a profitable trading book.
  • Run sales accounts for small to mid-sized customers.
  • Manage contract details, ensuring the accurate, complete, and timely release of physical coffee contracts.
  • Review third-party contract documentation and monitor the return of contracts.
  • Conduct currency hedging for contracts not denominated in USD.
  • Participate in daily green coffee quality tastings to enhance knowledge and understanding of coffee.
  • Update and distribute the spot price list weekly to internal traders and clients.
  • Assist in preparations for the month-end process and valuation (Profit & Loss calculation).
  • Support Senior Traders in creating client presentations and reports.
  • Assist Senior Traders with various daily tasks as required.

Candidate Profile

  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in the coffee industry.
  • Proactive with a strong desire to learn about all facets of the global green coffee trade, not limited to trading.
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic trading environment, managing tasks and competing priorities effectively.
  • Previous experience in related fields is preferred but not essential.
  • Diligent with a keen attention to detail.
  • Proficient in computer applications, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong numeracy and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with a focus on relationship-building.
  • Fluent in English; proficiency in other languages is a plus.
  • A committed team player willing to be flexible and assist colleagues across various tasks.
