Join Our Team at the Central Animal Facility
The Central Animal Facility is the largest unit of the Experimental Animal Center (EAC) at the University of Bern, Switzerland. Our primary mission is to breed and house small rodents and rabbits, providing essential infrastructure for conducting animal experiments that support the biomedical research program of the University. Emphasizing the principles of the 3Rs (Reduce, Refine, Replace), a "Culture of Care," and strict adherence to guidelines and regulations, we are committed to excellence in our field. We are currently seeking a Clinical Veterinarian for Laboratory Animals, to begin as soon as possible or by mutual agreement.
Areas of Responsibility
Clinical Veterinary Medicine
Provide independent veterinary medical care.
Implement preventive medicine programs, including routine health monitoring, import, quarantine, and diagnostics.
Participate in the veterinary on-call schedule.
Compliance
Ensure compliance with university guidelines and Swiss regulations.
Develop, review, and revise clinical-related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Contribute to the EAC veterinary pharmacy.
Audit veterinary medical records and other clinical documents.
Serve as a rotating member in internal facility and program evaluations.
Assist in creating datasheets for genetically modified animals and monitoring distress.
Scientific Support
Advise and support researchers on clinical issues, animal models, and breeding strategies.
Participate in internal training for researchers and animal care staff.
Support researchers with the animal administration database (PyRAT).
Requirements
Degree in veterinary medicine, eligible to work in Switzerland.
ECLAM / ACLAM board certification is a desirable plus.
At least 3 years of experience in laboratory animal medicine required.
Practical experience in embryo/breeding techniques is preferred.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Self-motivated, goal-oriented, highly organized, and resilient under stress.
Fluency in English and/or German; other languages are advantageous.
