Catastrophe Modeling Specialist

Swiss Re AG - April 28, 2025

Join Our Team as a Natural Catastrophe Modeling Specialist

We are seeking a dedicated Natural Catastrophe Modeling Specialist to enhance the development of our in-house catastrophe risk models. If you are passionate about contributing to a re/insurance company that prioritizes innovation in Research and Development (R&D) and possess strong programming skills, this opportunity could be the perfect fit for you!

About the Role

In this role, you will:

  • Contribute to how Swiss Re models natural catastrophe losses for our clients. Through kernel prototyping, you will help shape the translation of original policy-owner losses into net re/insurance losses.
  • Focus on developing the vulnerability component of our models and guide our model developers in this area.
  • Collaborate closely with Cat Perils model development teams to enhance kernels for the specific needs of perils such as earthquakes, storms, wildfires, and floods.
  • Gain insights from everyday underwriting support to understand sound risk selection, incorporating this knowledge back into catastrophe model and platform development.

About the Team

The Catastrophe Perils (Cat Perils) department is tasked with advancing Swiss Re’s proprietary global natural catastrophe risk assessment framework. This includes the models for probabilistic simulation of losses as well as the platforms and tools essential for effective underwriting, structuring, and risk management. Our Cat Perils team comprises approximately 50 dedicated scientists and engineers from various technical fields, driving confident natural catastrophe risk decisions.

Within Cat Perils, the kernel team is a specialized group focused on the development and maintenance of Swiss Re’s catastrophe modeling algorithms. Our codes define the interpretation of exposure data for insured items, embedding them into the numerical modeling world, simulating financial losses, and applying re/insurance structures.

About You

You are an enthusiastic and curious team player eager to delve into the dynamic field of catastrophe modeling. Your interpersonal and communication skills, combined with strong organizational capabilities, make you a great fit for our team.

You possess the following skills and knowledge:

  • A passion for working in a re/insurance company with a strong R&D focus.
  • A Master of Science (MSc) or higher degree in natural sciences, engineering, physics, or computer science, complemented by strong quantitative skills.
  • Experience in numerical modeling alongside proficient programming skills.
  • Familiarity with risk modeling software such as Oasis LMF or CLIMADA.
